Dr. William Fred Hinesley, Jr.

WILLIAM FRED HINESLEY, JR.

Dr. William Fred Hinesley, Jr., 78, of 29 Chatuachee Crossing, Savannah, died on June 3 at Memorial Hospital. He was born on August 3, 1931, in Atlanta to William Fred and Velma Alena Brown Hinesley.

He graduated from Mercer University, Macon, Georgia, and received his master's and specialist degrees in counseling psychology and his doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Georgia in Athens. He also studied at the University of Florida on a National Defense Education Act Scholarship to help develop a counseling program for the Bibb County schools, one of fifty selected counselors from throughout the United States to be chosen for this program.

Dr. Hinesley retired from the federal government, having served as a federal probation officer for the middle district of Georgia. After that retirement, he was the headmaster of Cross Keys Christian Academy, Macon, and Jonesco Academy, Gray, Georgia. He became a guidance counselor at Central High School, Macon. While there, he helped found and served as the first president of the Middle Georgia Counselors' Association. He was twice selected as the Georgia Counselor-Writer of the Year and also was honored as the Georgia Counselor of the Year. He published a study guide for students, "So Why Aren't Your Grades Better?"

For many years he and his wife were active members of the Tattnall Square Baptist Church, Macon, where he served as church treasurer, president of the Brotherhood, deacon, teacher of the Foster Bible Class and the Hal Colson Class and sang in the choir. After moving to Savannah to be near family, he and his wife joined Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir, served as a teacher for the Adult Forum Class and the youth, and attended the weekly men's Bible study. He was currently a member of the Skidaway Island Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Grand Years Sunday School Class and served on the outreach committee. Several years ago he attended the Walk to Emmaus, a spiritual retreat. He was also a Gideon.

For many years he was an active member of the Macon Exchange Club.

Dr. Hinesley had many hobbies. He loved to read and to garden. He was a former jogger, running in more than twenty 10K Labor Day Races in Macon. Perhaps his favorite hobby was singing. For more than thirty years he was an active member of the Barbershop Harmony Society formerly the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. in both Macon and Savannah. In Macon, he had served in every office, many more than once, and on most committees. In Savannah, he had been vice-president for membership. In both groups, he sang in several quartets, as well as the choruses. He was honored as the Barbershopper of the Year in Macon for 1999. Active in the seven-state Dixie District as well, he had been a chapter coach, the vice-president for membership, and was chosen as the District Barbershopper of the Year in 2000. One of the Society's affiliates is the woodshedding group, of which he was a member and secretary. He was inducted into that group's Hall of Fame. Dr. Hinesley had also edited the Sharptalk, the Macon chapter's monthly newsletter, which won an award for the most improved publication in the society, then won third place in the international competition. He was currently serving as a Grammar and Style judge for District and International newsletter contests.
